NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — New Orleans leaders cut the ribbon for a new silicon battery materials pilot plant in New Orleans East on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

According to a release, the Advano pilot plant is located in the New Orleans Regional Business Park and will use commercial-grade equipment to produce materials that will be used to make lithium-ion batteries.

The release states the plant’s location will “enable the company to deliver ton-scale volumes of its proprietary technology, REALSi™, and enter electric vehicle qualification programs in 2024.”

Officials said this technology will offer a reliable and sustainable domestic supply chain for materials used to make current lithium-ion batteries for things like electric cars, consumer electronics and defense.

“Advano’s Specialty Pilot Plant in New Orleans East is a great win for the region that aligns with and advances our all-of-the-above energy strategy,” said Greater New Orleans, Inc. President and CEO Michael Hecht.
